The Althorn

The Althorn was developed after the invention of the valves for brass instruments. Its tube is conically shaped. It flares almost continuously, which produces a flat sound. The althorn is mostly tuned in S and, tonally, it lies between the trumpet and the euphonium.

The oboe, also called the English horn, is a typical orchestral instrument. It is blown through a mouthpiece with double reed leaves. The airflow causes the two tube ends to vibrate, giving the oboe the typical sharp and nasally sound. The oboe is easy to hear and recognize in every concert.

The Trombone

The trombone is the oldest brass instrument that can be played in semitones. For a long time it had been forgotten. Ludwig van Beethoven put it back in the foreground. As a deep brass instrument, it is now played in all genres in solo or ensemble.

Saxophon

The Saxophone

The saxophone was developed around 1840 by the Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax. It combines a brass body with a mouthpiece similar to a clarinet. The saxophone is mostly played in wind music and as a solo instrument in jazz. The sound is produced in the mouthpiece with a so-called sheet of reed. Therefore, the saxophone is a member of the woodwind instruments.

Tenor and baritone horns are played in symphonic wind orchestras, brass groups and pageants. The oval construction makes handling easy and pleasant. The tenor horn has clear highs, the baritone horn soft depths. If you can play one, you can master the other – if you can read the notes of a violin or bass clef.
